Commercial LVT flooring in a daycare

If you love the look of hardwood, stone, or ceramic tile floors, but your budget says think again, commercial LVT flooring is for you. Commercial LVT, also known as luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring, is a waterproof and durable alternative to laminate and hardwood flooring with numerous colors and styles available.

Commercial LVT can fit the space and budget of small boutique owners and large medical facilities alike. Many styles of LVT are waterproof, making it an exceptional choice for yoga studios, bakeries, salons, gyms and daycares. No matter what business you’re in, LVT can enhance your space. Let us show you how!

What is commercial LVT flooring?

Gone are the days of traditional vinyl flooring — the thin vinyl of yesteryear has been replaced by new and improved commercial vinyl flooring. Five times thicker than old vinyl floors, LVT flooring is softer underfoot, more durable, and looks more like real hardwood, stone, or ceramic tile.

Is commercial LVT flooring the same thing as commercial LVP flooring?

The terms LVT and LVP (commercial vinyl plank flooring) are often used interchangeably when referring to commercial vinyl flooring. LVT usually refers to the square tiles that mimic the look of stone or ceramic tile, while LVP refers to luxury vinyl that looks like wood planks.

There is no difference how commercial-grade vinyl plank flooring and commercial LVT flooring are made – the only difference to consider is which look fits the vision you have for your space.

Is vinyl flooring good for commercial use?

Commercial LVT flooring has many qualities that make it superior to hardwood, stone, and ceramic tile for commercial use. But, like any long term commitment – LVT lasts a long time! – you should consider carefully before signing the dotted line. We’ve done the hard part and gathered a few of the pros and cons below.

Affordable

Did we mention commercial luxury tile and plank is affordable? LVT is lower in cost than most hardwood, stone, and ceramic tile flooring – helping you stay under budget while getting the best value for your dollar.

Waterproof

All commercial LVT is water-resistant and there are many completely waterproof options available. No more worrying about messy spills ruining the laminate flooring of your daycare!

Layers and Layers

Remember when we mentioned that LVT was five times thicker than the vinyl floor in your grandmother’s kitchen? Layers help LVT feel more comfortable to walk on than stone or ceramic tile, and LVT dampens sound which makes it a great choice for schools and daycares.

Durable

Those extra layers also make LVT ideal for high-traffic areas in shops and clinics. Commercial LVT is resistant to stains and scuffs, and won’t chip or scratch easily like other flooring.

Antimicrobial

Commercial LVT has an antimicrobial property in the topcoat. You won’t have to worry about nasty odors wafting up from your LVT flooring. The antimicrobial topcoat also helps slow degradation of the flooring color and overall product quality.

Slip-Resistant

For high traffic areas some commercial LVT has a slip resistant coating that helps prevent slips and falls.

Installation

This one is tricky. Installing commercial LVT is easier – and faster – than installing other flooring options, but proper installation requires the right prep, or your floor can go south, fast. To lay commercial LVT, the subfloor needs to be very level. If it’s not, your luxury vinyl tile will look less than luxurious – and it may not be as durable or water-resistant.

How do you install commercial luxury vinyl tile?

commercial luxury vinyl tile

Commercial luxury vinyl tile and plank flooring are among the easiest and fastest flooring types to install. The most common methods of installation are loose lay, floating, and glue down.

Loose Lay

Although this installation method sounds risky, it is THE fastest and easiest way to lay LVT and LVP flooring. The tiles and planks are laid down next to each other without clicking together or using glue. The rubber backing layer–another layer!–on the underside keeps the tiles or planks in place and adds extra softness and warmth to your finished floor.

Why loose lay? If a plank or tile is damaged, it is easily replaced without tearing up the entire floor. Want to change your flooring seasonally? Loose lay makes changing the look of your space quick and easy.

Glue Down

Just like it sounds, a layer of glue is used to adhere the LVT or LVP to the subfloor. Similar to loose lay, it is quick but does have some environmental requirements, like making sure the subfloor temperature is 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C) for 48 hours prior to, during and 48 hours after installation.

Floating

Floating LVT and LVP floors “click” together to keep the flooring in place, instead of using glue or a rubber backing layer. It’s much harder to replace tiles and planks that have been installed by click-locking, so keep that in mind when choosing the LVT style you want. If you go with a floating floor, and need a plank replaced, Lifetime Hardwood Floors will happily come to the rescue and make quick work of it.

What is the difference between residential and commercial LVT flooring?

Residential and commercial LVT flooring are very similar, but there are a few key differences that make commercial LVT particularly good for your bottom line.

Again with the layers…

Commercial LVT flooring is thicker than residential LVT flooring — around 20 mil for commercial compared to 12 mil for residential installation. If you have a very high-traffic business like a gym or salon — or if you want your LVT flooring to last even longer in your private office — you may consider a wear layer of 30 mil or 40 mil for your space.

Care and Maintenance of Commercial LVT Flooring

Routine care and preventative maintenance may be different for commercial LVT flooring, so make sure to review your LVT product manual — or ask us! We offer the full spectrum of LVT flooring services, from installation to repair and re-coating.

Commercial Luxury Vinyl Warranty

Most commercial LVT products come with a limited warranty that differs from the residential LVT warranty. Check the life of the warranty with the flooring manufacturer or installer.
